This is my first Elder Scrolls game. Apparently, the stolen goods silliness goes all the way back to Daggerfall. I haven't found enough information on Arena to know if it even involves stealing.
Like with other long-running series, I imagine the improvements are more apparent to established fans. I heard similar complaints about the lockpicking in Oblivion, and the level up system could reportedly be a pain in the ass. I love that Skyrim improved Fallout-style lockpicking by letting you attempt a lock at any level and scaling its difficulty accordingly. Fallout's hard line stat cutoffs are silly.
